Given the long-lasting environmental damage caused by plastics, the impending ban on single-use plastic items in the UK has not come as a surprise. A number of similar items were already banned, such as straws, cotton buds and stirrers, but in October 2023 a more far-reaching piece of legislation is due to come into effect, and it has serious repercussions for hospitality, travel, leisure and many other sectors of industry.
Businesses will no longer be able to supply, sell or offer a range of single-use plastic items, including cups, bowls, plates, cutlery, food trays and more. For the events sector, providing food and drinks to festivals, sporting events, concerts, garden parties, fetes, carnivals, funfairs and the like will now represent a series of challenges that some will struggle to come to terms with. To say the industry now needs a comprehensive rethink could perhaps be a major understatement.
The same issues apply, of course, to catering companies, airlines, travel hubs and more. These organisations will be strongly affected by a ban on the supply of single-use items, and since the government announcement in January about the upcoming legislation they will have been searching for reliable and practical solutions that will enable them to adapt without too much in the way of upheaval. Thankfully, the answers won’t be difficult to find.
New legislation, new priority, new solution leading to Single-Use Plastic Ban
